When I received this photo of artist Ron Tran, I laughed. I knew I had to use it for my blog.
It was sent by the Vancouver Art Gallery which is handling the communications for Wednesday evening’s ceremony honoring the recipients of the Audain Prize and the 2012 VIVA Awards.
Tran (along with Beau Dick) are the two winners of the VIVA Awards. It goes to artists who show “exceptional creative ability and commitment,” according to the VAG’s news release. Tran turned the banal head shot into something surprising and creative. Well done.
The winner of the Audain Award is Marian Penner Bancroft. It’s presented by the Audain Foundation for the Visual Arts for lifetime achievement.
Dick and Tran’s award is presented by the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation for the Visual Arts.
All recipients will be will be presented with the 9th annual Audain Prize at a ceremony at 7 p.m. in the Great Hall of the BC Law Courts. The entrance is at 800 Smithe. The event is free and open to the public.
